Picture Books Power Up Reading Programs- Even for Older Readers

May 17, 2010 | 0 comments

Elementary teachers may be approaching the end of this school year wishing they had spent more time sharing quality literature with their students. This CAN happen, even within the constraints of packaged literacy programs, in public, private, and home school situations. Teachers have an opportunity to participate in literacy activities at a two-day August workshop taking place at the New Berlin Public Library Community Room, offered through UWM's Education Outreach program.

Unpacking the Power of Picture Books is a workshop in which teachers from kindergarten through fifth grades are provided activities, titles, and resources that offer motivating, effective, and practical uses for high quality, authentic literature in the classroom. These include read-aloud/ think-aloud lessons, vocabulary development activities, exploring elements of art in the illustrator’s craft, developing deeper comprehension, content area connections, and strengthening test-taking skills.

Two full days of workshop interactions will be held August 10 and 11 at New Berlin Public Library, Community Room. Consider attending, come with a colleague, or pass along the information to someone who might be interested. Find out more, and register through UWM Education Outreach: http://www4.uwm.edu/soe/departments/outreach/picturebook_workshop/
