Ike boys beatShorewood,St. Francis

Lions hoops improveto 4-0 overall

Dec. 13, 2011 | 0 comments

New Berlin - It was a good week for coach Dave Scheidegger's New Berlin Eisenhower boys basketball team, as it won three more games and improved its overall record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Woodland Conference Black Division coming into this week.

The Lions opened the week with a 61-57 win at Shorewood on Dec. 6 and then beat St. Francis, 87-48, on Friday at home. Eisenhower then defeated a good Brookfield East team, 55-49, at Carroll University on Saturday.

Shorewood

The Lions began the week by holding off a second-half comeback at Shorewood, but hung on to beat the Greyhounds by14 points.

Eisenhower jumped off to a big first-half lead, scoring 19 and 20 points in the first two quarters to take a 39-22 lead at intermission. But it was all Shorewood after that, as the Greyhounds cut the lead to 10 points going into the final period, 51-41. They then outscored the Lions, 16-10, but it was too little too late.

Reed Timmer drilled in three 3-pointers on his way to a 21-point night, while Keith Kahlfeldt put in 16 points. Sandro Pesquiera and John Crowley added eight and seven points as Eisenhower was only 10-for-17 from the free-throw line.

Donovan Freeman and Deion Jackson-Body led the Greyhounds (2-2, 1-2) with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

"We just stopped doing the things that got us the lead," Scheidegger said after the second half. "Our press wasn't as good, we got quicker shots in our offense. We weren't as patient. We have to focus for 32 minutes."

St. Francis

Once again the Lions had a good first half, jumping off to a 44-21 lead at intermission with 23 points in the first period and 21 points in the second quarter.

The Mariners played better in the third period, as Ike only out-scored them by four points to take a 61-34 lead into the final quarter. But Eisenhower poured it on again in the final period, with a 12-point advantage (26-14).

Pesquiera had a career game with 30 points, which included six 3-pointers. Timmer added 24 points, Charlie Sirek had 11 and Kahlfeldt had seven.

"Sandro Pesquiera is an excellent player," Scheidegger said. "He's a great shooter, a good ballplayer, who can play the one, two, three; he could probably play the four if we asked him to."

Eisenhower used a 13-6 first quarter lead to hold off Brookfield East of the Greater Metro Conference on Saturday in a game played at Carroll University.

Timmer had an outstanding game, as he nailed 8-of-10 free throws and four 3-pointers to finish with 30 points. Kahlfeldt added 10 points. Mikey Novak led the Spartans with 17 points and Nick Kanavas had 11.

East out-scored the Lions, 43-42, in the final three quarters as it was a hard-fought game on both parts. Ike led 20-15 at half-time and the 40-34 after three periods as the seven-point first quarter held up.
