New Berlin - New Berlin Eisenhower had plenty of breathing room early on in Friday night's 62-48 win over Brown Deer. However, the blowout home victory translates only to a breath of room early on in the division title race.
While moving to 5-0 in the conference and 7-0 overall, the Lions maintained a half-game lead over undefeated Whitnall (4-0, 8-0) for first place in the Woodland Conference, Black Division standings. The Falcons of Brown Deer slip to 3-2 in the Blue Division, sliding into third place behind Thomas More and Pewaukee.
Sophomore point guard Reed Timmer led the Lions with 17 points but had a cold shooting night from the outside and relied heavily on his teammates for support.
The first Eisenhower run was supported by at trio of first-quarter 3-pointers from junior Mitch Arman. Those nine first-quarter points would be all Arman scored for the game, but they gave the Lions a 20-8 lead after the first.
"I am confident in every one of my teammates and if my shots aren't falling I know they are going to nail their shots," Timmer said. "I'm confident in every one of them to make shots."
The second quarter saw another Lion assert himself offensively.
Junior Sandro Pesqueira rattled off five points late in the first half to push Eisenhower ahead by 20 at the break. Pesqueira along with senior Keith Kahlfeldt each finished with 14 points, giving the Lions three players in double figures.
"As a team we have been working on our roles and I thought all of our positions played well tonight," Lions head coach David Scheidegger said. "This was our best flow on offense but it's a work in progress as is everybody's at this time.
"We push it pretty good but when we have to hunker down and just run our offense it has been hot and cold."
The Falcons leading scoring, junior Trayvon Palmer, finished the game with 16 points and a handful of blocked shots while playing with a jammed, possibly broken finger. Palmer suffered the injury in the previous game but taped it up and played his full allotment of minutes on Friday night.
Timmer failed to score 20 or more points for just the second time this season. He tallied 19 against New Berlin West earlier in the year but the fact that Eisenhower won both games he came up short in is more important to Timmer than his point totals.
"I try to get a feel for the game and tonight was one of those nights I was off so I tried to go crash the boards more, get rebounds and try to get fouled," Timmer said.
"Being the point guard you have to kind of jump into that leadership role and make sure the offense flows right."
The Lions play in the New Berlin Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday against Pius XI and Franklin.
