New Berlin - Senior Keith Kahlfeldt and sophomore Reed Timmer sparked the New Berlin Eisenhower boys basketball team to a 31-point victory over Greenfield, 69-38, in the Woodland Conference opener Friday at home.
Eisenhower (1-0) put the Hustlin' Hawks out of their misery early, leading 43-14 at intermission. Ike outscored Greenfield 21-9 and 22-5 in the first two quarters.
In what probably will be a familiar sight this year, Kahlfeldt and Timmer did most of the damage for the Lions.
Kahlfeldt scored 23 points, which included 10 field goals, while Timmer added 20 points, including 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Senior forward Jake Sperka was the next highest scorer for the Lions with seven points while Gerald Bufford III added six.
Ricky Santiago had 17 points to lead Greenfield.
"I'm hoping we can pick it up defensively this year," Ike coach Dave Scheidegger said. "We want to play people straight up, with some good team man-to-man.
"We want to step it up in that area. For the most part we did OK. We have some personnel who can do some different things and that excites me."
With some new people getting playing time, Scheidegger feels people need to learn the offense quickly.
"The offense - for one game it was good," he said. "They are learning their roles, learning team offense, what their teammates strengths are, what their role within the offense - five people working as one."
Eisenhower, who played at Shorewood (1-1, 0-1) on Tuesday, host St. Francis (0-3, 0-1) on Friday and then travel to New Berlin West (1-2, 0-1) on Tuesday, all three games are at 7:30 p.m.
