Vikings' girls fall short of regional final

March 15, 2010 | 0 comments

New Berlin — The New Berlin West girls basketball team's season fell just short of a regional final showdown with crosstown rival New Berlin Eisenhower.

Instead, in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal, second-seeded West was upset by sixth-seeded Milwaukee Lutheran, 39-37, March 11.

Visiting Lutheran outscored West, 8-6, in the final quarter.

The Vikings got a game-high 17 points from Stephanie Turner and 10 from Hailey Kunz. The Red Knights were led by Johnikka Nash's 15.

In the regional final on Saturday, Milwaukee Lutheran lost to Eisenhower, 50-34.

In a regional quarterfinal, 14 Vikings scored in a 77-17 home blowout win over St. Joan Antida on March 9.

Turner had 12, followed by Anny Kaczynski's 11, Kunz's 10 and Shannon Burke's nine.

West outscored its St. Joan's, 24-0, after one quarter and led, 61-5, after three quarters.

The Vikings finished with a 16-8 record, four wins better than last season. They were 13-5 in the Woodland Conference, second only to Pewaukee (17-1 conference) in the league's Blue Division.

"While we were very disappointed with the loss and our season ending sooner than expected, I am very proud of what the team and all the girls that make up our entire program accomplished this season," first-year coach Corey Scheel said.
