Two squads with a touch more depth prevented both the New Berlin and Muskego boys swim teams from winning their respective conference meets Saturday.
New Berlin had a meet-best six event victories in the Woodland Conference finale at Greenfield, but fell shy of Shorewood by 23 points as the Greyhounds, who won just one event, claimed their first conference crown in 67 years.
New Berlin beat Shorewood, 102-81, in a conference dual just 11 days earlier but tallied 451 points to the Greyhounds' 474 at the league meet.
In the Southeast Conference Meet at Racine Case, the host school won only twice compared to Muskego's meet-high four victories, but the Eagles edged the runner-up Warriors, 439-415.
Case tied Muskego, 93-93, in a league dual Jan. 26 that resulted in the teams tying for the dual meet title with identical 6-0-1 records.
The two local teams will compete in the WIAA sectional meet at Waukesha South at noon Saturday. Diving is at 5 p.m. Friday. The winners of each event qualify for the state meet, as do the next 18 best individuals, relays and divers (excluding other sectional winners) from sectionals statewide.
At the Woodland meet, New Berlin swept the relays. Chris Kaminski, Jasen Johnson, Jared Moranski, Josh Solie kicked things off with a victory in the 200-yard medley in 1 minute, 42.17 seconds. Solie, Moranski, Matt Schumacher and Rodenkirk won the 200 freestyle in 1:30.90 and Kaminski, Schumacher, Johnson and Rodenkirk claimed the 400 free in 3:16.64.
Rodenkirk's fine day also included wins in the 200 free (1:44.36) and 500 free (4:43.85).
Johnson added a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.78).
For Muskego, Bobby Wolf had his hand in three victories including individual wins in the 200 free (1:51.60) and 500 free (4:52.74). He also teamed with Patrick Walsh, Ben Wierzba and Brian Roberts for first in the 400 free relay (3:28.10).
Roberts also tallied a win in the 100 free in 50.86.
