Lions down Rockets to keep streak alive
Eisenhower now 17-0 with five games to go
New Berlin — The streak continues.
The New Berlin Eisenhower boys basketball team improved to 17-0 with a 69-39 home win over South Milwaukee on Friday.
The Lions closed the door early on the Rockets, avenging a near-loss to South Milwaukee on Jan. 8.
After a close first quarter ended in a 14-12 Eisenhower advantage, South Milwaukee shot a combined 4-for-20 in the second and third quarters and fell behind, 50-28, going into the fourth.
"We pressed on the kids this week," Eisenhower coach Dave Scheidegger said. "We found out down there they have a strong, strong history of athletics and boy, do they have a lot of pride. Basically, we just challenged our kids to play as hard as the red Rockets.
"Our kids beat the challenge."
Eisenhower's defense limited South Milwaukee to 33 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers.
Despite handling the Rockets throughout the game, Scheidegger knows there is still room for improvement.
"We've got a lot of stuff to work on," the Lions' coach said. "We're breaking stuff down every day and I saw some of it tonight…there's a million things to work on."
With five games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Lions chances at an undefeated season look promising. Their biggest test will be back-to-back games against conference opponents with winning records, Wauwatosa West (Feb. 12) and Whitnall (Feb. 16).
As far as the streak goes, Eisenhower's coach wants nothing to do with it.
"We don't focus on that at all," Scheidegger said. "We'll work on the fundamentals, try to work on some toughness stuff, and wherever it takes you, it takes you."
The Lions shot an impressive 59 percent from the field, including 7-for-17 on 3-pointers, and 12-for-16 from the free-throw line.
The Lions' starters combined for 44 of their 69 points. Senior forward Mitch Sperka led all scorers with 15 points
South Milwaukee dropped to 8-9 overall, 7-6 conference.
