Muskego girls basketball

Despite being held to a season low in points, the Warriors opened the Optimist Classic at Janesville Craig with a 38-32 win over Oregon on Dec. 28.

Offense was no issue the next night as Muskego trounced Waunakee, 67-47, the Warriors' high-water mark for points this season.

Rachel Neuberger had a game-high 11 points and Sarah Mlachnik added nine in the win over Oregon.

After being held to seven and five points respectively by the Panthers the night before, Katie Ellerson (19) and Alyssa Colla (17) exploded for a combined 36 in the Warriors' 20-point win over Waunakee.

Jessica Mlachnik chipped in a season-high nine for Muskego, which improved to 6-1 overall entering this week.

Nick Binder's 4-3 mark was good for eighth place at 171 pounds at the prestigious Oshkosh on the Water tournament Dec. 29-30.

Binder's performance highlighted New Berlin's effort at the two-day event that featured three place-winners and six of 10 wrestlers surviving the first day of action.

Zach Brucker was 6-2 and ninth at 135 and Hlu Vang went 5-3 for 10th at 103 for New Berlin. The other three to make it to the second day were Heng Vang (112), Zach Reuteler (215) and Nick From (285).

"I was talking with quite a few other coaches who had brought more wrestlers and had less going on the second day then we did," New Berlin coach Nick Patenaude said. "Individually I wish that we would have had a higher place-winner, but I'm happy with the three individuals that did place."

Ten of the 58 teams at the tournament are ranked in either the Wisconsin Wrestling Online or Crossface polls and more than 750 competitors in 14 weight classes attended. New Berlin finished 28th.

It took someone from out of state to finally hand Derek Olson his first loss of the season.

Olson lost to Destin McCauley of Apple Valley, Minn., in the 152-pound semifinal match at the Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna Friday and Saturday.

After winning his first four matches of the tournament, Olson dropped to 24-1 thanks to an 8-4 decision to unbeaten McCauley (13-0). Olson bounced back to win a pair of decisions, including a 5-1 victory over Brandon McBride of Montini, Ill., in the third-place match.

Two Warriors took fourth at the talent-packed tournament. Justin Scherkenbach (21-4) went 4-3 at 112 pounds with all three losses coming to non-Wisconsin athletes, including a pair to Terry Dawson of Brandon, Fla.

Jordan Gruettner (21-4) went 4-3 with three pins at 189 with two of his losses coming to Milton's James Miller and the other to Stoughton's Eric Nelson.

Also for Muskego, which placed 12th of 25 teams, Tyler Quartullo (130) and Alex Kehoe (215) were ninth and Ryan Leighton (285) was 10th.

New Berlin West boys basketball

The continued absence of junior star Chad Mathwig and two other starters plagued the Vikings in their own holiday tournament Dec. 29-30.

Dustin Elias scored 13 points and Jesse Riehle added 10 in a first-round, 45-42 loss to Rhinelander. A two-point second quarter was costly for West.

The next night, it was the first quarter that gave the Vikings fits as Little Chute raced out to a 20-8 lead en route to a 59-47 victory.

Riehle had 16 for the Vikings, but none of his teammates had more than seven.

The offensively challenged Vikings have scored more than 53 points just once this season and have not pushed past 47 with Mathwig sideline with an ankle injury. He had missed three straight games as of Monday, all losses for the Vikings, who were 5-5 entering this week.

West's Cody Tomsak and Mark Kaczynski have also missed time with injuries.

Muskego boys basketball

The Warriors' three-game winning streak was snapped by Steve McWhorter and visiting Racine St. Catherine's.

McWhorter scored 20 points and teammates Jordan Fouse and Chris Souter chipped in 10 each as the Angels knocked off host Muskego, 64-43, Dec. 30.

Jake Pope had 11 points and Danny Frawley and Craig Robins chipped in eight each for the Warriors, who led, 15-11, after one quarter but were outscored, 53-28, the rest of the way.

Muskego began this week 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Southeast Conference.
