Before making a run at their fourth straight state appearance, the Warriors took care of business in the Southeast Conference for a second straight campaign.

With Mike O'Connor and Alex York leading the way, the Warriors won the league race with 55 points at Lake Denoon Middle School on Oct. 17.

O'Connor finished in 16 minutes, 43 seconds and York in 16:48, behind only Racine Horlick's Johnny Binzak in 16:24 and Racine Case's Kyle Schueppler in 16:38.

Zac Hopp, Nick Rudd and Joe Blommel ran 13th, 16th and 19th, respectively, for the Warriors, who will try for their fourth straight sectional title at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 24.

Regular-season champion Muskego, the top-ranked Division 1 team in the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association poll, won the Southeast Conference Tournament title at Oak Creek on Oct. 17.

The Warriors, who finished 6-0 in league dual action with a three-game sweep of visiting Racine Case on Oct. 13, received the first seed and a first-round bye in the WIAA tournament and will host a regional final match against either eighth-seeded Racine Horlick or ninth-seeded Greendale at 7 p.m. Oct. 24.

At the Woodland Conference Tournament, the Lions did something they could not do during the regular season: beat Wauwatosa West.

But in the championship match, the Lions were on the wrong end of history. Host Greenfield defeated Eisenhower, 25-21, 25-22, 26-24, in the tournament finale Oct. 17. It was the Hustlin' Hawks' fourth straight appearance in the tournament final, but first conference tournament championship in school history.

The Lions, who had lost to Black Division champion Wauwatosa West twice during the regular season, defeated the Trojans in the semifinals Saturday after winning matches over Whitnall and Saint Thomas More in pool play two days earlier.

Katie Mroczenski, Emily Yanny, Carolyn Bogart, Andrea Ruiz and Lindsay Brown played well during the tournament for the Lions, who began WIAA postseason play against Pewaukee on Oct. 20.

Three runners in the top eight were not enough for the Warriors to upend Kenosha Tremper at the SEC race Oct. 17.

Muskego's Niki Drolshagen was fourth (15:12), Abby Wichgers seventh (15:56) and Amy Klaus eighth (15:56), but the Warriors finished second to the Trojans, 34-60.

Muskego will run in the sectional at Parkside at 10 a.m. Oct. 24.

It took three goals, two overtimes and two days for the visiting Wauwatosa West Trojans to end the Lions' season in a WIAA regional semifinal.

Pat McDowell's goal in the 97th minute in the second overtime gave the ninth-seeded Trojans a 3-2 win over the Lions on Oct. 14. The game began Oct. 13 and was suspended because of darkness after the first overtime period.

The Lions (15-6-1) took a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-half goals, one each by Justin Wieland and Tyler Nickerson. They assisted on each other's goal.

But the Trojans, who lost to the Lions, 3-1, earlier this season, responded with second-half goals from Ben Zaeske and Nico Zabala, with Zabala's coming in the final minute of regulation.

Host Greenfield, the team that handed New Berlin West its first conference loss of the season earlier this month, bounced the Vikings out of the Woodland Conference tournament Oct. 17.

The Hustlin' Hawks, the eventual tournament champions, beat the Vikings, 25-13, 25-22, 25-19, in a semifinal match and left West in a third-place tie with Wauwatosa West.

Two days earlier, the Vikings won a pair of tournament pool play matches at home, beating St. Francis, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19, and Pewaukee, 19-25, 25-10, 25-13, in come-from-behind fashion.

Against St. Francis, Martha Radtke had 12 kills and 12 digs and Cayla Golsteyn led all players with 22 assists. In the match with Pewaukee, Radtke upped her kill total to 17, Golsteyn had 22 assists again and Kellie Shaw had 14 digs. Casey Luehrs contributed with three aces, the same number of blocks by Rebecca Gasper.

Sammy Woller's school record placed her sixth at the Woodland Conference Meet at Cudahy's Sheridan Park on Oct. 16.

Woller finished in 15:05.99 and was followed closely by teammate Therese Thompson, whose second-best time of 15:13.22 was good for eighth and helped the Lions take fifth as a team.

Seniors Megan Thachuk (16:27.41) and Adriana Gutierrez (16:29.66) finished in 32nd and 33rd, and moved into the top 15 in school history.

Freshman Eric Deustch led the 12th-place Eisenhower boys in 18:58.7.

The teams will race in the sectional at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at McCarty Park in West Allis.

The third time was not a charm for Muskego freshman Amy Upthagrove.

Upthagrove fell to her longtime friend, Kenosha Tremper's Megan Humphreys, 6-1, 6-1, in a first-round WIAA individual state tournament match at Nielsen Stadium in Madison on Oct. 15.

It was the third time this season Upthagrove lost to Humphreys, the other losses coming in the Southeast Conference tournament and in SEC dual play.

It was the fourth straight year Muskego had a state representative.

The state's third-ranked Warriors posted another blowout, this time a 144-42 decision over visiting Oak Creek on Oct. 13.

Muskego won every event but diving including four wins by senior Caitlin Budnick. She was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 22.11 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.59) and was on two winning relays, the 200 medley with Emma Szczupakiewicz, Sami Pochowski and Jessica Wolf (1:57.47) and the 400 freestyle with Kristen Kaiser, Claire Borland and Brittany Walsh (3:53.83).

The Warriors also placed seventh at the 21-team Highlander Invite at Homestead on Oct. 17.

Walsh won the 500 free in 5:07.74 and the 200 medley relay of Szczupakiewicz, Pochowski, Budnik and Megan Liebl swam fifth in 1:55.88.

The Warriors entered the final week of the regular season still searching for their first win.

Despite 149 rushing yards by workhorse running back Luke Pryzbylka, the Warriors lost, 14-7, to host Oak Creek on Oct. 16, dropping Muskego's record to 0-8 overall, 0-6 conference.

Pryzbylka scored a 4-yard touchdown with 3 minutes, 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cut Oak Creek's lead to 14-7, but the Warriors were never able to recover from Oak Creek's Darrol Inniss' 64-yard, second-quarter TD that gave his team a 14-0 lead.

Muskego played host to winless Racine Case on Oct. 21 in the regular season finale.

New Berlin West swimming

After starting the season 0-2, the Vikings won their third straight league dual, a 99.5-70.5 victory over the host Brown Deer/University School co-op Oct. 14.

West's Corey Wannamaker captured the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.21) and 100 free (55.82); Lindsey Rodenkirk won the 200 individual medley (2:27.47) and 100 backstroke (1:04.82); Katie Hausmann was first in the 50 free (25.27) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.11); and Sydney Hider claimed the 500 free (5:55.98).

Rodenkirk also teamed up with Hausmann, Chloe Banholzer and Leah Kritter to win the 200 medley relay (2:03.01) and Kritter, Hausmann, Hider and Wannamaker took the 200 free relay (1:46.67).

New Berlin boys volleyball

The New Berlin United improved to 14-3 overall and remained undefeated in the Woodland Conference (8-0) with a sweep of visiting Greendale on Oct. 14.

Chris Pokrzywa's 19 assists and Adam Vlaj's 12 digs and four aces paved the way to New Berlin's 25-11, 25-11, 25-16 victory.

Muskego boys volleyball

The Warriors picked up a sweep of host Mukwonago behind Sam Benson's 14 kills and Tony Fugarino's 21 assists Oct. 12.

Muskego won, 25-14, 25-18, 26-24. Tayler Nordstrom chipped in with four blocks.

The Warriors could not keep the momentum rolling, however, and lost to red-hot host Franklin, 27-25, 25-20, 25-17, three days later despite Fugarino's 13 assists and Mike Dziennik's seven kills.

Grace Postma ran 16th in 15:51 and Matt Schumacher was 21st in 17:32 to lead the West girls and boys cross country teams at the Woodland Conference Meet on Oct. 16 in Cudahy.

Both Vikings squads finished eighth in the team standings.
