Eisenhower softball player chooses school

New Berlin Eisenhower catcher Megan Duerlinger has committed to play softball for Purdue University North Central in Indiana, according to PNC assistant coach Denny King.

Duerlinger, a senior, was a Wisconsin Softball Coaches Association all-state selection and was named to both the Woodland Conference and NOW All-Suburban teams after her junior campaign during which she batted .421 with 28 runs, 28 RBIs and six home runs.

Muskego athlete wins triathlon in Pleasant Prairie

Lauren Jensen of Muskego won the 2009 Danskin Triathlon in Pleasant Prairie on Sept. 27.

The professional triathlete finished the half-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 56 seconds.

Christine Anderson of Chicago was second in 1:04:03.

More than 2,200 women registered for the event which took place at the Lakeview RecPlex. The Danskin Chicagoland/Pleasant Prairie race is the final race of 10 sprint distance triathlons held this year. More than 21,000 women registered for the 2009 Danskin Series and events in five cities sold out.

Cheerleading showcase coming to Eisenhower

Fifth- through eighth-grade middle school youth cheerleading squads are invited to participate in the 2009 Southeastern Wisconsin Cheerleading Showcase on Oct. 24 at New Berlin Eisenhower High School, 4333 S. Sunnyslope Road.

All squads will be evaluated by qualified judges, and high school cheerleaders can provide spotting for youth stunting, if desired.

The cost is $10 per cheerleader. Spectator admission is $2 adults and $1 for students (eighth grade and younger). Children 5 and younger are free.

Muskego's Mass earns Big 12 volleyball award

Iowa State's Ashley Mass of Muskego has been named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season on Sept. 8. It marks the seventh Big 12 award overall for Mass, who ties former gymnast Janet Anson for the most in a career by an ISU female student-athlete.

Mass recorded a league-best 5.21 digs on the week as the Cyclones went 3-1. She also had a pair of service aces and 11 assists. The 2008 Big 12 Libero of the Year registered a season-high 25 digs at No. 13 Minnesota. Mass chipped in 19 digs each against Northern Iowa and George Washington.

In ISU's sweep of Auburn, Mass had 10 digs, including eight in the final set to extend her streak of consecutive double-digit digs to 21 matches.

Local soccer team wins Racine tournament

The MK United U14 girls soccer team won the Lighthouse Classic tournament in Racine on Oct. 10 and 11.

MK United won the championship over the Pewaukee Pirates with a 3-2 shootout advantage. Rachel Snyder was in goal for MK United and saved two goals.

Rachel Snyder, Emma Burt, Keely Gorse, Kylie Pratte and Danielle Jensen took the penalty kicks for MK United, which is coached by John Ackerman and Robin Bautzmann and consists of players from Mukwonago, Eagle, Muskego, Big Bend and Wind Lake.

New Berlin West to honor first hall of fame class

New Berlin West honored its initial class of Athletic Hall of Fame members Sept. 12.

George Zuniga (1965 graduate), Jim Ellis (1974), Scott Evans (1977), Sue Kuglitsch (1982), Kristin Becker (1986), Beth Brochhausen (1986), Kurt Peltzer (1987), Rachel (Barnes) McKinley (1988), Corey Hauser (1994), J.J. Tischer (1994), Jason Rutz (2003) and Charlie Averkamp (2004) were inducted as were coaches Ray Carney, Gail Champion and Dean Molinaro.

Kenosha Adult Hockey Club accepting teams, players

The Kenosha Adult Hockey Club, an adult no-check league, has openings for teams and individuals to participate in its fall-winter league.

KAHC is for players 18 years and older with games held at Kenosha Ice Arena, 77th Street and 60th Avenue. The KAHC plays a 22-game schedule and up to two playoff games. All games are on Saturdays and Sundays.
