Four Lions named to All-Suburban Softball Team
For the second straight season, the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions softball team led the area in players selected to the NOW All-Suburban Softball Team.
The Lions landed an area-high four players on this year's squad, a year after getting three picked for the team as well as having the coach of the year in Jeff Setz.
This year's selections were senior pitchers Lauren Beres and Kayla Schlegel, senior outfielder Liz Wiese and junior catcher Megan Duerlinger. Beres, Schlegel and Wiese made the team last year; this is Duerlinger's first All-Suburban selection.
The Eisenhower players were joined by Menomonee Falls' Beth Nitz (pitcher) and Morgan McCoy (outfield), Greenfield's Shannon Butts (utility), Stacey Butts (infield) and Sara Fisher (outfield); Brookfield East's Lexi Sotiros (infield); Germantown's Amy Johnson (infield) and Jannelle Schroder (utility); Cudahy's Alisa Damitz (infield); and Homestead's Michelle Zoeller (infield).
Shannon Butts was named the player of the year. Greenfield's Jack Miller is the coach of the year.
Neither Muskego nor New Berlin West had a representative on this year's team. Muskego seniors Nikki Guhr, an infielder, and Shelly Adamczyk, an outfielder, however, were high honorable mentions.
For the first time ever, fans had a say in which players made the team through online voting. Fan voting accounted for 25 percent of the selection process; staff voting made up the rest.
The leading online vote-getters at each position: utility - Shannon Butts (94 votes); outfield - Fisher (69); infield - Stacey Butts (89); pitcher - Cudahy's Sam Homa (86); catcher - Duerlinger (108); coach of the year - Miller (89); and player of the year - Sotiros (74).
