Detmer takes over reins as new New Berlin wrestling coach

Dec. 2, 2013

First-year New Berlin wrestling coach Patrick Detmer will have some excellent talent among his returning athletes this year, including two sectional qualifiers, a regional champion and a Woodland Conference champion.

"After losing only one senior to graduation from a year ago, our team is ready to continue to build on their level of success in the Woodland Conference," Detmer said. "We return a strong group of leaders from last year's team including Regional Champion Emilio Gutierrez, a senior, and Woodland Conference Champion Alex Rodriguez, a junior.

"Other strong senior leaders include Kevin Thiessenhussen, a three-year starter, Jake Szaniawski, Zach Nordstrom, and John McArthur. Overall numbers in the program are up and there are a number of freshman and sophomores looking to step up to the varsity level."

Detmer has eight returnees led by six seniors.

Besides Gutierrez, Thiessenhussen at 170 pounds and Nordstrom at 138 are both sectional qualifiers. D.J. Heinrich at 126/132 joins senior returnees Szaniawski at 160 and McAruthur at 170/182.

The two returning juniors are Rodriguez at 195 and Jarod Clark at 132.

Three promising newcomers to watch are senior Anthony Meyer at 145, sophomore Cameron Jakubowski at 132 and freshman Joe Scaffidi at 152.
