New Berlin Eisenhower swim team nabs second at sectionals
West finishes sixth; Tew wins two first places
New Berlin - If you were a New Berlin swimming fan at the WIAA Division 2 Sectional on Saturday at Cudahy, then you had plenty to cheer about.
From a team point-of-view, New Berlin Eisenhower scored 272.5 points and finished second behind Fort Atkinson (329) and ahead of Whitewater (255.5), Whitnall (227), Elkhorn Area (216) and New Berlin West, which finished sixth (199) out of 14 teams.
"Sectionals is a hard meet because there's so much pressure to perform," first-year Eisenhower coach Jenny Moeller said. "We had some really great swims and some disappointing ones, but it's hard to walk away disappointed with the finish that we had.
"When they handed us the plaque for second place, the girls were thrilled. They're very proud to be able to bring that home to Eisenhower."
Eisenhower had five swimmers qualify for this year's WIAA State Swimming & Diving Championships on Nov. 9 and 10 at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium. There were two relays and four swimmers in six individual events.
Meanwhile New Berlin West had four swimmers qualify in one relay and three individual events.
Tew good again
Once again stealing the show individually was the Vikings' talented sophomore Madison Tew, who took two first places. Tew won two events as a freshman at last year's state tournament.
Tew finished first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 55.50 seconds and the 100 free (52.74), the only first-place finishes for the Vikings.
"Madison will get the opportunity to defend her 200 free state title and fight for the 100 free state title," West coach Becky Young said. "Both races have very talented girls; however Madison loves to race and I really believe in her. Both races will be very exciting to watch."
Eisenhower's only first came from the 400 free relay with a school record-breaking time of 3:38.60 behind sophomore Nicole Bellford, freshman Shayna Putney, senior Sam Rottel and freshman Paige Carter in 3:38.60.
"The 400 freestyle relay swam amazingly fast," Moeller said. "Bellford and Putney swam faster than they've been all season and started the relay off very well.
"Sam Rottel totally skipped the 53 and split a 52.8. Carter, our anchor extraordinaire, came home in 53.4."
Ike record broken
"Then I looked up at the time and yelled, 'They broke the school record.' It was an incredible swim," Moeller said.
West's 200 free relay of sophomore Emily Szydlowski, senior Amber Kazinski, junior Kayla Rasmussen and Tew finished second (1:40.99) and Rasmussen took third in the 50 free (25.16).
"Kayla Rasmussen is a first-time state qualifier in the 50 free and we are all really excited for her," Young said.
"The 200 free relay has really excelled all year. I am so proud of the girls for how hard they have worked this year and how far they have come."
Eisenhower had two individuals qualify in two events.
Rottel finished second in both the 50 free (25.06) and in the 100 free (54.02).
Carter took second in the 200 free (1:56.94) and third in the 100 free (54.28).
Junior Steffi Durley was second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.03) and Bellford finished third in the 100 fly (1:01.31).
The Lions 200 free relay of Bellford, Putney, Rottel and Carter also finished third (1:41.47).
