New Berlin — As New Berlin students return to school the day after Labor Day, they will see a few changes.
Eisenhower Middle/High School students will see more secure exterior doors to make sure those visiting the school come in through the front doors. Exterior door replacement was not finished over the summer, but door replacement is part of the district's long-range facilities plan.
The students probably won't care about the parking added over the summer at Elmwood Elementary School, but staff and parents will. Also, a new front drive was finished at Poplar Creek Elementary.
What will be really different for all students will be math instruction.
After researching and piloting a new math program, the district has switched to the new math teaching plan that is in line with the new more rigorous statewide Common Core standards.
The new math program focuses on a deep understanding of mathematics in addition to teaching math skills and fluency.
Students will see new math textbooks and online math resources this year. They will replace resources that were 10 to 25 years old.
Teachers were trained on the new resources over the summer and will continue professional development with the new resources during the year.
