New Berlin — Superintendent Paul Kreutzer will take a voluntary pay and benefit freeze next year.
The School Board on Monday approved freezing his pay/benefit package at $201,000 for the 2010-11 school year. Kreutzer actually will take somewhat of a cut in pay next year because his state-mandated retirement contributions will go up.
Kreutzer said he reported pay of $163,000 on his 2009 taxes.
Times are tough for taxpayers, so he volunteered to have his pay frozen, Kreutzer said.
"This was voluntary on my part," he said. "I understand these are hard economic times and we need to lead from the front."
If compensation across the board could be moderated or frozen, the district would be in great financial shape next year, he said. It is unlikely that all employees would agree to do that, but Kreutzer said he hopes they will follow his lead so the district can get some financial stability.
The board extended not only his contract for a year, but that of several other administrators, including assistant superintendent, the school principals and assistant principals, the director of pupil services, and the curriculum coordinators.
In June, the board will have a better handle on the 2010-11 budget, Kreutzer said, and then a decision will be made about raises for those administrators.
The board will next consider extending contracts for the director of buildings and grounds, food service director, and technology coordinator.
Kreutzer said freezing his compensation has nothing to do with performance.
"My evaluation was the best I've ever had," he said.
Kreutzer said all the administrators are doing great jobs and none will be dismissed.
