Details of Capitol Drive construction plans offered

Feb. 23, 2010 | 0 comments

Brookfield — Waukesha County residents will have a chance to review plans for the proposed 2012 Capitol Drive improvement project next week.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will present the latest information about the $14.2 million effort to rehabilitate an eight-mile segment of Highway 190/Capitol Drive between Highway 74 in Pewaukee and Highway 100 in Wauwatosa on Wednesday at the Brookfield Public Safety Building.

The meeting will be in an open house format, with displays about the proposed changes available for viewing. DOT officials will be there to answer questions.

The project calls for repairing and resurfacing Highway 190, as well as adding turn lanes and upgrading traffic signals at intersections. Some medians and turn lanes could be altered or closed, similar to the state's 2008 project on Bluemound Road in the city of Brookfield.

The state also plans to replace and widen the bridges over the Fox River near Barker Road to accommodate additional turn lanes that would be built at Barker and Capitol.

Bridges over the Menomonee River Parkway in Wauwatosa and Duplainville Road in Pewaukee would be rehabilitated and redecked, but not widened.

In conjunction with the roadway work, sidewalks would be built on both sides of Capitol from 124th Street to Brookfield Road in the city of Brookfield, except for a small section in front of Wisconsin Memorial Park. The city is responsible for 25 percent of the costs of that project and has budgeted $750,000 for land acquisition this year and $400,000 for construction when the road work is undertaken.

The city also plans to spend $500,000 on improvements to the Capitol-Calhoun Road intersection.

The Capitol Drive project is scheduled to start and be completed in 2012, but that could be moved up to next year or pushed back if federal funds become available for repaving work on Interstate 94, said Dennis Shook, DOT spokesman.
