New Berlin — The way is clear for New Berlin's two high schools to team up to form a joint girls golf team that could tee off as early as this fall.
The New Berlin School Board gave its blessings last week to forming a girls golf team that would be a counterpart to the boys golf team. Both a varsity and junior varsity girls teams would be formed.
The $7,000 cost would come out of co-curricular funds and revenue the golf matches would generate, so it would not impact the school budget, Eisenhower High School Principal Michael Fesenmaier said.
Between Eisenhower the New Berlin West High School, at least 14 girls would like to be on the team, Fesenmaier said, and about five of them could compete at the varsity level.
So far, the North Shore athletic conference has approved the New Berlin girls team to compete in the conference, Fesenmaier said. Two other conferences will decide soon about whether they would accept a team from New Berlin as well.
Additional details will have to be worked out with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, he said.
Fesenmaier said other schools also are considering adding girls golf.
