Coffee Road could be ready for drivers on time in New Berlin
Street slated to re-open Oct. 15 despite rainy spring
New Berlin — Coffee Road, a major east-west road through New Berlin that has been closed since mid-April, still could reopen by the Oct. 15 target date despite major delays from a rainy spring, said J.P. Walker, New Berlin city engineer.
Coffee is closed from Racine Avenue east to Calhoun Road.
Although project work started on time this spring, the contractor could not do as much as he wanted to because of the weather, Walker said. Since then, though, the weather has been more cooperative and the contractor has been going full blast and has made up time, he said.
The project has been split up into four segments with two of those segments 80 percent complete and a third about 50 percent done, Walker said. The easternmost segment from Heide Lane to Calhoun Road is still waiting to be started.
Even so, Walker said, "I'm optimistic about being able to make the Oct. 15 deadline."
The project is turning out to be more extensive than expected, said Mayor Dave Ament. The subsoil in some places has meant the road couldn't be simply repaved but had to be redone from the ground up, he said.
But it's still within the budget, he said.
The major road project includes repaving and a foot has been added to each lane making them 12 feet. Also, five-foot paved shoulders are being added to both sides of the street, Walker said.
Turning lanes will be added to the west side of Calhoun Road and bypass lanes and turning lanes are being added at various other locations, he said.
Roadside ditches that funnel stormwater safely away from homes and businesses are being regraded and storm sewers added in two areas.
A huge five-foot diameter culvert will be installed under the road at Woodland Drive and sewer work started recently at Wehr Road.
The storm sewers are intended to eliminate flooding problems, he said.
