Physical WISCO beats Lions for trip to state

March 03, 2013 11:07 a.m. | An athletic Wisconsin Lutheran team used outstanding scoring balance and a good defensive effort by senior guard Larry Moore to beat New Berlin Eisenhower, 60-42, and run away with the WIAA Sectional Championship and a trip to the state tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Friday and Saturday.

After scoring five points in the first quarter, New Berlin Eisenhower junior guard Reed Timmer looked like he was on his way to another big scoring night, but Moore, at 5-foot-6 inches, then held Timmer to two, three and four points in the last three quarters, for a total of 14 points.

Even though Timmer led all scorers, The Vikings spread the ball around as nine players got on the scoreboard, as five players scored between six and 13 points, the latter by star senior guard Deion Cunningham.

“They are all very good basketball players,” Eisenhower coach Dave Scheidegger said. “They’re physical, they’re strong. With the flow of the game — there were not a lot of fouls called. I don’t mind that, but then you better be the more physical team. You have to match their physicality. We tried, but it wasn’t enough.”

The Lions got off to a fast start and led 13-8 when Sandro Pesqueira hit Mitch Arman with a pass for a layup with 2 minutes, 7 seconds left in the first quarter. But then The Vikings went on 11-0 run, 9-0 to close out the period with a 17-13 lead.

Keith Franklin hit a 3-pointer, Moore hit a jumper, Cunningham scored off a steal, Jalen Sims scored on a fastbreak to end the quarter and Cunningham hit a jumper to open the second period for a 19-13 lead.

After a rebound basket by Timmer, it was all downhill for the Lions, as WISCO went on an 11-4 run to take a 30-20 lead into intermission. A jumper by Arman and a 3-pointer by Pesqueira were the Lions only points.

Anthony Carver’s rebound basket, a jumper and a fastbreak basket by C.J. Polk made it 36-20 with 5:45 left in the third quarter.

The Lions last run came when Timmer hit a jumper, was fouled and scored, Pesqueira hit a jumper, Corbin Messman hit a 3, Nick Ganzke hit a jumper and Pesqueira nailed another 3 to cut the lead to 44-33 with 1:06 left in the third quarter.

But that was the closest Eisenhower got the rest of the game.

“They were good,” Scheidegger said. “With some teams if you make a mistake, you can get away with it. But with them, boom, they capitalize in two seconds. They let nothing go. We only had eight turnovers, but we had problems with rebounding all year.

“And once they separated from us, well they are just too good a team.”

Timmer (14), Pesqueira (13), Messman (9), Arman (4) and Ganzke (2) were the only Lions to score. Cunningham (13), Polk (11), Dez Cockroft (9), Carver (8) and Franklin (6) led the way for the Vikings.

Eisenhower finished with an excellent 22-4 record, having won the Woodland Conference West Division with a 15-2 record. The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak to end the year.

Wisconsin Lutheran is 21-5 and opens with Stoughton (17-8) at 3:15 p.m. Friday at state.

Voter forum slated for New Berlin mayoral candidates

March 01, 2013 12:40 p.m. | A second voter forum for the remaining New Berlin mayoral candidates - Mayor Jack Chiovatero and Alderman David Ament - will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. March 9 in the New Berlin West Middle/High School library, 18695 W. Cleveland Ave., by the Rotary Club of New Berlin.

Recordings of the forum will be available at City Hall and at the New Berlin Public Library. This is the fifth year the Rotary Club has been sponsoring voter forums.

Three mayoral candidates were eliminated in the Feb. 19 primary election.

Timmer leads Eisenhower past Catholic Memorial

Feb. 28, 2013 10:38 p.m. | New Berlin Eisenhower rallied behind the offense of Reed Timmer and the defense of Corbin Messman and defeated Catholic Memorial, 52-43, Thusday at Greenfield and advanced to the WIAA Division 2 sectional finals at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The two top seeds - Eisenhower (22-3) and Wisconsin Lutheran (20-5) - will meet at West Allis Central to decide who advances to the state tournament. Wisco defeated Milwaukee Washington, 52-48, to advance Thursday.

After seeing Timmer score nine points in the first quarter, Memorial's Andre Bodden helped shut him out in the second period, as the Crusaders overcame a 14-11 first-period deficit to take a 24-20 lead into intermission.

Bodden added two baskets to start the second half for a 28-20 lead, before Timmer took over the game, as he has done many times throughout his three-year career.

First he scored on an inbounds play, drew a foul and tossed in a free throw. Then he sank two more free throws, scored on a drive, was fouled and finished another 3-point play and drilled a 3-pointer to complete a personal 11-0 run for a 31-30 lead.

Walmart conducting petition effort for proposed New Berlin store

Feb. 26, 2013 6:45 a.m. | Anyone who has been to the Walmart in the New Berlin City Center lately knows that the store is inviting customers to sign a petition if they would like to see the Walmart Super Center proposed for Greenfield Avenue built.

The store has a display of where the controversial Walmart would be located, showing its placement including how far off the road it would be.

If shoppers pause at the display, a staff member invites them to sign the petition if they would like the store to be built.

Currently, Walmart officials are trying to win city approval of the proposed store at 15205 W. Greenfield Ave. The store would need a change in zoning and in the city 2020 Comprehensive Plan.

The goal of the petition is to try to show city officials that there is support for the proposed Walmart.

State of City/County/State event this week

Feb. 25, 2013 5:54 p.m. | The New Berlin Chamber of Commerce will hold its State of the City/County/State event, featuring presentations and a question-and-answer period, at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, 15441 W. Beloit Road, New Berlin.

Presentations will be given by New Berlin Mayor Jack Chiovatero, County Executive Dan Vrakas and state Sen. Mary Lazich. They will focus on issues and challenges coming in 2013, as well as their individual plans, activities and initiatives.

Breakfast will be served.

The cost is $10 for chamber members and $15 for others.

People, groups or businesses can nominate a business that has shown dedication to the community through charitable donations, service activities and growth in either work force or sales.
