Motorcycle group to adopt Wisconsin unit in Iraq
Not everyone supports the war, but we all should support the troops. A wonderfully practical way is by sending “care packages”.
Food and drink make a hit
It isn’t a festival without food and beverages, and the Fourth of July is no exception. When the New Berlin Lions and Lioness and the Prospect Lions become involved, you can be assured their profits support our community.
Thursday morning, July 3, the New Berlin Lioness will be on deck to set up their food tent with the help of their Lions, who sell beer and wine coolers at the next tent.
4th of July parades
I hope to see you at one of the many community parades on the 4th of July. I will be walking in the following parades:
12 pm: Franklin 4th of July Parade
1 pm: New Berlin 4th of July Parade
4pm: Hales Corners Parade
On Sunday, I will walk in the East Troy Parade at 1 pm.
Statement from New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Government
The July 3 issue of Now, Muskego New Berlin Public Forum page, contained a letter from Janet Brantzeg of New Berlin, supporting the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter in Muskego.I wish to clarify a comment about Citizens for Responsible Government and Muskego First. The group which I am the president of is: New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Government (NBCRG) NBCRG is NOT the CRG group mentioned, and is not affiliated in any way with the CRG Network. NBCRG does not interfere with proceedings in our neighboring communities and would expect the same treatment from them about New Berlin issues.
I personally have the opinion that recalls should only be attempted in the event of criminal behavior or malfeasance on the part of officials. It should not be used in an attempt to silence or influence votes on any issue. The costs of any recall election is measured in many ways, including long lasting hard feelings and many thousands of taxpayer dollars which could be spent elsewhere.
We encourage voters in the City of Muskego consider the consequences of this possible recall action before initiating it.
Thank you, Ralph Heun, President New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Government
Beware of "Police" Charities Solicitations
Our department has recently been fielding several calls from citizens asking about police and sheriff's charities that are asking for donations over the phone. While several of these charities may be legitimate, some are not. Many of these charities are national organizations and the New Berlin Police Department does not see any of the money you donate. The New Berlin Police Department does not solicit donations from citizens by phone, mail, e-mail, or in person. If you have questions or concerns about a solicitation, please contact myself, Dan Hanlon or Tony Fus at the police department and we can look into the situation. Please get the name of the soliciting organization, the caller's name, and a mailing address and phone number for the organization so you can pass that information on to us.
While we do not solicit donations from citizens, several of you have approached us and asked about making a donation to the department in general or to a specific program, such as the K-9 program, the SWAT team, bike patrol, youth programs, etc. Donations are always welcome and citizens wishing to make a donation to the police department should contact Chief Joseph Rieder at (262) 780-8102 or Lt. Mike Glider at (262) 780-8109.
Stunning
That was the word one of the speakers at today’s Sendik’s opening in Franklin, I believe it was Franklin Mayor Tom Taylor, used to describe the architecture of Sendik’s and the adjacent Target, set to open July 23. You can see a picture of Sendik’s in Senator Mary Lazich’s blog. The buildings do look great at the Shoppes at Wyndham Village, off to a very good start with lots of movement and activity.
CRG & NBCRG
“Statement from New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Government” (NBCRG July 4 blog post on NOW), starts off with a load of gibberish (computer symbols/code) that Ralph Heun calls a “defect of Jsonline”.
NBCRG advances proposal to save millions of tax dollars
New Berlin Park & Recreation wants $3,200,000 to $3,800,000 to build baseball fields at Milham Park.
New Berlin citizens for Responsible Government(NBCRG) has researched the proposed development of baseball fields at The Milham facility, 20900 W Cleveland avenue, and would like to suggest a cost efficient alternative plan:
District Propaganda
New Berlin Public Schools spent $7,552.61 on the 4-color, 4-page December newsletter it mailed to community residents.
Court ruling creates big budget hole
A ruling by the Wisconsin Supreme Court in favor of Menasha Corporation of Neenah will result in a huge hole in the state budget. The high court ruled that the state was wrong to collect sales taxes on customized computer software sales from Menasha and other firms in Wisconsin. The sales tax money collected will now have to be returned and the Legislature must address the $265 million gap.
Here are details from the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel.
As I did with the 2007-09 state budget and the state budget repair bill, I will oppose any solution to this latest budget problem that includes a tax increase.
50 years of State Fair Corn
It seems like the New Berlin Lions Club always has been selling corn at State Fair -- probably because this project dates back further than most residents can remember.
This club, which was chartered through Lions International in 1950, got its start roasting corn at the Butler Frontier Days in 1957, according to Lloyd Bornemann, Lions publicity chairman. .
State adding more names of sex offenders to special website
The Appleton Post-Crescent is reporting the state wants to add information about some of Wisconsin’s most dangerous sex offenders to a website by the end of summer. These are offenders who have failed to comply with state registration requirements and are still at large. When found, they face fines, jail, or prison time.
Here’s the Post-Crescent article and the website for Wisconsin’s Most Wanted Noncompliant Registered Sex Offenders.
National Night Out 2008
National Night Out is Tuesday, August 5, 2008. The purpose of National Night Out is to promote crime prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood ties, and send a message to criminals that New Berlin residents care about their neighborhoods and will not tolerate crime.
On National Night Out, please turn on your outside lights and take some time to meet with your neighbors. Also, as our city has seen an increase in burglaries and continues to experience thefts from vehicles, this night should serve as a reminder to remove your valuables from your car and call our department (262-782-6640) on all suspicious persons and vehicles.
Saturday Scores
The Muskego Hitmen trounced the Wauwatosa Spartans in an exciting game last Saturday. It was the foggy night’s biggest upset in the IFL because the Spartans had been undefeated this season.

- Milwaukee Venom 35 vs. Burlington Blue devils 21
- Rock County Gladiators 26 vs. Fond du Lac Crusaders 20

Sen. Lazich Makes "Dishonor" Roll
Recently, the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters published a Conservation Scorecard of our state legislators’ votes on key conservation issues during the 2007-08 legislative session. Mary Lazich got a dismal score-- the lowest score of the Wisconsin State Senators.
Sales tax a Good Option for Parks
The
Milwaukee County Park Department was once regarded as the best urban park
system in America
and was the envy of other large metropolitan areas. It served as the national
model for public investment in open space, recreational facilities and
programs. This is no longer true. While the rest of the nation has discovered
the wisdom of upgrading park facilities and investing in new parks our park
system has experienced a significant decline in funding due its reliance on the
property tax as a means of support.
From 1983 to 2007, the county’s overall tax levy grew by 112%, out-pacing inflation, yet during that same time, the park system’s share of the levy shrunk by 18%. Factored for inflation over this twenty-four year period, the reduction in park funding is a sobering 65%. This reduction has led to an unconscionable build-up of deferred maintenance and a loss of nearly two-thirds of the full time workforce. As staff levels have dropped there has been a related increase in the perception that our parks are not as safe as they once were.
Congrats to the New Berlin School Board
We would like to offer congratulations to the New Berlin Board of Education for the 4th straight year by approving a budget increase of less than 1%.
Residents approved the budget at the Annual Meeting, which was held at 7:30pm Monday July 28, at the New Berlin West Performing Arts Center, with an unanimous vote.
