New Berlin Police Department writes 53 safety belt citations during intensified enforcement period
New Berlin officers issued 53 safety belt citations during an intensified traffic safety enforcement period from January 8, 2010 through Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 7, 2010. In addition to tickets for violations of the mandatory safety belt law, officers issued the following citations:
- 126 speeding violations
- 99 operating after revocation or suspension
- 18 traffic sign or traffic light violations
Officers also made arrests during traffic stops, including the following:
- 19 operating while intoxicated
- 18 drug arrests
- 1 felony arrest
- 24 warrant arrests
"We want all drivers and passengers to buckle up voluntarily—every trip, every time,” said Chief Rieder. “But if people don’t wear a seat belt, we’re prepared to stop their vehicle and give them a ticket. Too many people are killed or injured in traffic crashes because they weren’t buckled up. That’s why we take safety belt enforcement seriously. We hope that one day the number of preventable traffic deaths will be zero in Wisconsin.”

Seatbelts in Wisconsin have been mandatory as long as I've known. The difference is the state recently made it so police can stop you simply for not wearing a seatbelt. Prior to this, police needed to stop you for some other violation in order to enforce the seatbelt law. The penalty for not wearing a seatbelt is still just $10.

No longer living in Wisconsin / New Berlin / Brookfield and now in Raleigh, North Carolina what has taken Wisconsin so long to pass a manditory seat belt / restraint law ??
N.C. Has had one for years, and has saved many lives in auto accidents, and also reduced injury aswell.
I hope no one is complaining. Kurt
