Fundraisers to Support New Berlin’s D.A.R.E. Program
By Lt. Mike Glider
The New Berlin Police Department has been teaching the D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) since 1990. Now going on our twentieth year, our original DARE graduates are in their early 30’s and raising families of their own. One of my students from the early days of DARE had her fifth grade daughter graduate from Glen Park’s fifth grade program last year and it really made me feel old. Through the years, DARE has constantly updated its curriculum to keep pace with the challenges that kids face growing up these days. While the original program focused on cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana; we are sadly now talking to kids about heroin, ecstasy, inhalants, and the new drug of choice, prescription pain killers taken from home medicine cabinets and shared with others.
All of the materials for the program come from donations. The New Berlin business community has been tremendous in helping support us through the years, allowing us to maintain one of the strongest programs in southeastern Wisconsin. We could use your help as we partner with two local businesses to raise money for DARE.
Fast Track Oil Change Centers have agreed to donate $3 to DARE every time you mention New Berlin DARE when you get your oil changed or have any other service performed on your vehicle. You will also get $5 off the regular price of the oil change. This is an ONGOING fundraiser, good at any of their locations and no coupon or voucher is needed.
Also, on December 12th, the Barnes and Noble Book Store at Brookfield Square will be donating a portion of their sales to DARE every time a special DARE voucher is used to make any purchase on that day. The Barnes and Noble vouchers and more information on both fundraisers can be found on the city’s website, www.newberlin.org. Click on “Police” and then click on “Events”. Thanks for helping to keep our kids, our schools and our community drug free!
