Established in 1965, HAWS assists over 6,000 animals and welcomes more than 31,000 human visitors annually. As an "open admissions" shelter we lead the community in animal welfare and assure sanctuary for all animals in need, regardless of age, health or temperament. HAWS is a non-profit, entirely donor-fund organization with an active humane education program, and both wildlife and companion animal rescue services for Waukesha County.

HAWS is joining a national movement in support of the underdog, celebrating HAWS’ adoptable dogs, alumni and rescue dogs in general with "Project Blue Collar."
An official launch will be held at HAWS this Saturday, January 18th, when all dogs adopted will receive a free Project Blue Collar collar. Additional collars will be available for purchase for $10 for those who already have a rescue dog as part of their family. HAWS has always been proud of our adoptable dogs – now every rescue dog owner can help underdogs become heroes and share their pride in their rescued best friend!
A charitable company, Project Blue Collar is designed to dispel the myth that shelter dogs are damaged or undesirable. PBC merchandise, including apparel, toys, and accessories, allows owners to raise awareness of their pride in their rescue dog, while helping elevate the status and perception of all rescue dogs.
As a Rescue Network Partner, HAWS benefits from the sale of Project Blue Collar merchandise, both at the Waukesha shelter and through sales at projectbluecollar.com – online shoppers can choose HAWS as the give-back beneficiary at the checkout screen.
Adopt 4 paws from HAWS! Join the ranks of those in support of the underdog by bringing a rescue dog into your home – HAWS is open 7 days a week for viewing and adoptions. Not a “dog person”? Find your best feline, feathered or small and furry friend in our Cat Adoption or Small Animal wards.
