Thieves Are Having No Trouble Locating GPS Units

The New Berlin Police Department has taken several reports of stolen GPS units from vehicles in the past two weeks.  The"hot item" for Christmas has now become the "must have" for Grinch-like thieves, who are not afraid to break your car window to get at their target.

The GPS units can cost anywhere from $200 to $500 and even more for the pricier models with more bells and whistles.  Many people leave their GPS units mounted to their windshields or dashboards, where they are easy to see and easy to steal.  The police department is asking you to either take your GPS unit with you when you leave your car, or at least make sure it is out of sight if you must leave it in the car.  Leaving your GPS in plain sight could be compared to leaving three $100 bills on your dashboard and daring someone not to break your window to get at them.  These units can be taken very quickly because they are small and usually not secured in a vehicle.  They also have a high resale value on the street.

Fraudulent Tax Refund Scam

On January 29th, 2008, the New Berlin Police Department received information from the Eau Claire Police Department about a Fraudulent Tax Refund Scam that is being done via e-mail originating from Pakistan.  Citizens are contacted via e-mail and notified that they are to receive an additional tax refund from the IRS. E-mails are from the following sender:  notice@irs.gov  Recipients are instructed to copy a web address and paste it into their web browser address. This will re-direct the recipient to a legitimate looking website that will ask for your Social Security Number and a Debit or Credit Card number to deposit the refund into.  This is NOT a legitimate website. The New Berlin Police Department encourages you to delete this e-mail and not respond.  The Internal Revenue Service also wants to remind citizens that they never use e-mail to notify citizens of tax refunds. If you get e-mail from what appears to be the I.R.S. or other government agency asking for personal financial information, do not reply and delete the message.  There is no need to contact law enforcement, just delete the message.

Traffic Preemption Devices

January 30, 2008 To the Citizens of New Berlin:                        The officers of the New Berlin Police Department wish to express our gratitude to the companies, organizations, and individuals who helped us make another intersection safer for all emergency responders and citizens in our city.  Traffic preemption devices were recently purchased and installed at W National Avenue and S Sunny Slope Rd.  These devices detect emergency vehicles as they approach an intersection, triggering the signal to turn green and stopping other traffic until the emergency vehicle safely crosses the intersection.  The list includes:            -The New Berlin Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau            -The New Berlin Lionesses            -The Tri-County Riders            -Schoeneck Containers            -Wal-Mart            -Target            -National Regency            -The New Berlin Citizen’s Academy Alumni Group            -Arlene Stock and Joan Doberstein             Our department is continuing to seek donations to complete approximately 10 intersections yet to be equipped with traffic preemption devices in our city.  Our goal is to do at least one intersection per year (approximate cost per intersection is $8,500).  Please contact Officer Hanlon at hanlon@nbpolice.org or 262-780-8106 if you, your organization, or your business would like to contribute to the safety of our officers, emergency responders, and citizens.  Thank you.  Officer Daniel Hanlon
