NBPS Will Be Airing the President's Message to Students Tuesday Morning
According to its Web site, on Tuesday at 11 am, the New Berlin School District will be airing a live broadcast of President Obama’s message to school children about the importance of working hard and staying in school.

Click here for the board president/superintendent's Sept. 4 letter addressed to “district stakeholders”. In it, they point out that Presidents George HW Bush and Ronald Reagan had attempted to reach out to American school children to encourage greater achievement.
NBPS will be broadcasting the president’s speech live and providing students/their parents an opportunity to opt out of the activity if they wish.
Bravo! This was a good decision by New Berlin Public Schools officials.
Their Communication to Schoolchildren
President Obama gave a fine speech that urged kids to work hard and stay in school and I’m glad that New Berlin Public Schools broadcast it live Tuesday morning.
Of course, it’s not the first time a president had directed a message to the nation’s children.

Alderman Ament's Antics
New Berlin Alderman Dave Ament proposed a measure as a Requested Action Statement for the July 28 City Council meetings, despite knowing State law prohibits Council action on it.
Instead of grandstanding at a city government meeting, trying to skirt the law, and wasting the Council’s time, Ament could have held a press conference to announce he was giving a portion of his pay to the City and would like to see other City officials do the same. Or he could have simply refunded some of his pay to the City without fanfare. Those options are not illegal and would have been better, classier.
What Will They Do Now?
New Berlin Fifth District Alderman Joe Poshepny missed a number of meetings due to illness. Apparently, he has been getting treatment (rehab. facility) for some injuries and dealing with other health and personal matters. He spent some time in the hospital. NewBerlinNOW reports that Poshepny sent a letter of resignation to the city on Aug. 26, but withdrew his resignation 13 days later (the date the Council planned to deal with the opening). Ald. Ted Wysocki argued for filling the seat. He contended the Fifth District “deserves representation”. It was deferred after City Attorney Mark Blum said he needed to do some research before rendering a legal opinion.
Blum has since advised that under state statutes the resignation became effective when it was received. However, Poshepny can apply to be appointed to the aldermanic post. See NewBerlinNOW report.

This socialist-free pledge, which was posted on Daily Kos, is quite an interesting eye-opener. The Political Environment and MetroMilwaukeeToday blogs have also referred to it.

The Vacancy
The recent 5-1 New Berlin aldermanic vote to declare Ald. Poshephy’s seat vacant and direct the City Clerk to advertise the vacancy was heartless and disrespectful of District #5 voters.
Joe Poshepny was elected alderman by the people of the city’s 5th District. I live in District 5. Poshepny had been very ill during the past four months and missed meetings. Most folks feel compassion for the ill or injured and consider serious illness/injury a valid excuse for meeting or work absences. District 5 residents were willing to cut Ald. Poshephy some slack. In fact, Mayor Chiovatero reported that he “received no emails, no phone calls and nobody came to any meetings saying they were not represented.”
