Letter to WHEDA: Deny New Berlin City Center development financial request

WISCONSIN LEGISLATURE
P. O. Box 7882 Madison, WI  53707-7882

June 11, 2010

Secretary Antonio Riley

WHEDA Board Members

Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority

201 W. Washington Avenue

Suite 700
Madison, WI 53703

Dear Secretary Riley and WHEDA Board Members,

As you may be aware, a development project has been proposed for the City of New Berlin's City Center and includes provisions for financial assistance from WHEDA.  The project has generated considerable controversy and there is very strong opposition to the project within the community.  Many New Berlin residents oppose the project and do not want WHEDA assistance for the project.

As you may also be aware, support for the project was solicited during March 2010, and we, the Senator and Assemblyman representing the City of New Berlin, did not provide letters of support for the project.  We write this letter today to make it clear that the lack of a letter of support was indeed intentional on our part and was not a mere oversight during the very busy legislative period.

We understand that there are a number of projects throughout the

state of Wisconsin competing for WHEDA assistance.   We further

understand that other legislators have indicated their support to WHEDA for those projects within their districts.  While there is not only a lack of local support for the New Berlin City Center project, there is extraordinary opposition to WHEDA assistance for the project.

In closing, we respectfully request that WHEDA deny the request for financial assistance for this City of New Berlin City Center project.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,
