Smoke Screen for possible move of recycling center?

Guest Editorial for Vern Bentley

Public Forum

The Waters' Wood Recycling Services proposes to operate a processing site for clean wood waste at the Johnson Sand and Gravel Pit located off of Crowbar Road and Interstate 43 in New Berlin.

City Staff was asked if the present, centrally located recycling Center would be moved to the Johnson Quarry Site?

Reply! Moving the Recycling Center is not part of this public hearing.

Their Business description reads; Waters will work with the City of New Berlin to reduce or eliminate the costs of their existing recycling center by offering Waters' site as a replacement for residential drop off of clean 'waste materials' thereby allowing the sale of the city's tub Grinder, support equipment and all labor costs.

This might be the first step in moving the recycling center from it present  site behind city hall.

Editorial comment from Ralph Heun

Not part of public hearing???  Why not? Remember a couple of years ago closing the recycling center seemed to be a priority with city staff.

The resulting firestorm changed the staff's mind pretty fast.

If every one checked Mapquest they can determine
extra time and mileage. For me it is extra 7 miles. At 35 miles an hour it's about an additional 14 minutes each way on city streets. If I made every stop light i've added a half hour a trip. In fall as I indicated earlier, i'm looking at an extra 2 hours. I can find better use for my time.
  2. Well, well, well. So we can still drive as much as we want as long as it’s not more then 5 minutes away? I didn’t get the memo from the Sierra Club on that. Maybe you can get Chiovatero or Moore to comment under their real names so we are clear on how far we can drive or how long it takes. Maybe he could push for a train to take us out there. Or better yet instead of flying those fuel-efficient jets all over the world he could fly people out there.
It seems your opinions are group specific. If you live on the west side or near the quarry you should not be concerned about exhaust fumes or global warming. Why would a lib advocate that the majority of residents drive farther then they need to? OH I forgot, you live in the area of the current site and it affects you. Sounds like it’s more about being a liberal NIMBY.
  3. "all the way out there" It's 5 minutes farther than the current location. How in the world is this a Liberal/Conservative discussion? Headly?
  4. I can’t believe you lib’s are actually promoting that we drive all the way out there when the current location is closer to most of us. What about all the carbon created by our cars? What about global warming? Moore would be disappointed in you. Uh! I forgot, Bush, Palin, Reagan, Wysocki, Seidl, Ament, the BOE…it’s their fault. We need to change the Council and elect people with a socialist, woops I mean moderate, view like our friends at “Who Cares” and “Take Back Our City for Special Interest Developers like Gatzke.”
  5. I don't think the issue is so much smell, as traffic. It's a quiet residential area, but we have commercial traffic levels running through it, often leaving a trail of debris. Recycling center is better suited to a more isolated area. The quarry seems like a good choice.
  6. "I doubt it. As for the smell of compost, well, I deal with the smell of cow manure being spread on nearby fields. It's country living, which is why I'm here. Don't like it? Go live in a condo in Milwaukee.... by Jones Island."

Or move the recycling cnter to where the smell is over powered by "the smell of cow manure being spread on nearby fields. "
  7. Is chipping done on weekends, or evenings? I doubt it. As for the smell of compost, well, I deal with the smell of cow manure being spread on nearby fields. It's country living, which is why I'm here. Don't like it? Go live in a condo in Milwaukee.... by Jones Island.
  8. I mentioned Alderman Ament because the recycling center is in his district, not Alderman Wysocki's. I was not insinuating anything about Ament. He's actually a pretty decent guy.

Many people may not realize it, but Top-O-Hill ended in a circle until the city "temporarily" extended it to Casper about 35 years ago.

The smell of compost is more apparent on summer days when the breeze is out of the west south-west toward Top-O-Hill Drive area. - where I live. It is where branches are occasionally dropped on the street as people speed to the recycling center. Chipper noise is heard in certain parts of our neighborhood also. Perhaps now is the time for anyone who likes those features to advocate for it to be moved to their neighborhood.
  9. Have any of you contacted your aldermen or the mayor and ask them. I do regularly and find that some are more helpful then others but I almost always get an answer. But then again if I had the facts I could not claim to be a good Christian when I go to a blog and make false accusations. Richter/Who Cares and Wilkens/Take Back Our City for Special Interest Developers comes to mind.
  10. Ralph, I am glad you bring both these items up. Unfortunately, unless New Berlin Citizens log into New Berlin Now, and look at your blog they are not aware of either item. So much for open government.
