Then Again

If you missed the forum ...

If you missed the candidates’ forum last Saturday -- sponsored by the Rotary Club of New Berlin -- you still have a chance to view it on tape in the City Hall chambers. But you are asked to call the clerk's office at 262-786-8610 to check when this room is available.

Running political forums used to be Jeanne Crotty’s contribution to her community – and she did this for years. But she gave up this project when her health started failing a couple of years ago, and she passed away last fall.

With a big election coming up Tuesday, April 7, a former School Board member twisted my arm to carry on the Crotty tradition. Now, needing a sponsor, I appealed to my fellow Rotarians, who gave me their eager support.

Next, I enlisted the help of my friend, Kay Jashinsky, who had served as Crotty"s assistant over the years.

We also had the backing of the New Berlin School District, which provided the site -- the New Berlin West High School library -- as well as setting up tables and chairs and taping the proceedings.

Everything was clicking, including the participants. When I contacted the two mayoral candidates and the four people running for School Board, all could participate that day.

Even the weather cooperated. And for those candidates anxious to get out on the campaign trail, they only had to be committed for a little more than an hour. Mayor Jack Chiovatero and Ald. Ted Wysocki, a former mayor, each were looking to serve a second term. They competed from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by the School Board candidates.

Susan Manley previously had served a term on the School Board and Paul Lincoln Scheuble was an alderman. Although their competitors, Keith Hastings and Peggy LaSalle, were new to politics, they bravely held their own in the barrage of questions from moderator Tom Koller, Rotary president.

If you prefer going on line for candidate information, the School District provides the following:

  1. This seems like a great initiative. Speaking personally, I use the internet to get more information about medication and I am often unsure how reliable the information is. A single portal to reliable sites would be a great help in this area and if you want's to get breif knowledge on the same you can visit http://affordablemedz.com/
  2. I watched the forum...........thanks for your efforts to get this on the web so we can watch it.

These (meeetings) are the things we should be watching on the web if possible. Children at our high schools living their daily lives at school should not be on the web (like the Superintendent is showing). The web based camera system New Berlin is using on our students should be disconnected from the web, pronto. But that is another issue. One thing I found amazing was candidate Hastings regarding his comments and the bomb threat at Eisenhower this year. Hastings is one of those guys, like a lot of people, that thinks because some kid wrote something on a bathroom mirror that freaked everyone out, because that's the kind of hyper active world we live in these days, requires us to give up all our rights to be subject to invasive monitoring. Mr. Hastings..............I went to school in 1975 and we had bomb threats. Guess what...............we didn't give up all of our privacy and you know what....................99.99 % of the time it's just a hoax. You don't have to give all your liberties away every freaking time something happens ! And for the .01% of the time that something happens...........................well................it happens.................but you don't have to live in a police state the rest of your life because it did happen.................geeesh. We have laws to chase down the people that want to do damage .01% of the time............just enforce the laws we already have.
  3. Thanks for the links and the video on the debate. For those of us who are interested it's a great resource of information. Unfortunately, the Council under Dave Ament's leadership, got rid of public debates at city hall and does not allow them to be televised - ignorance is bliss.
  4. Are you sure about Scheuble? I thought he was an alderman... And did the School district charge the rotarians for the use of the room. I thought the acoustics were very poor in that brand new room...
