HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING - MAY 27, 2014
Four students will attend the World Affairs Seminar in June thanks to scholarships from the New Berlin Rotary Club.
Students from the New Berlin Blitz First Robotics Team 5148 demonstrated their robot to the Board of Education. Students, advisors and mentors were celebrated for their successes as a first-year robotics team.
In honor of Memorial Day, Board President David Maxey thanked Mayor Ament, the Veterans of VFW Post 5716, New Berlin Boy Scouts, the New Berlin Band, Ken Herenda, Joe Sanfellipo, Mike Kuglitch and many other volunteers who give of their time at the annual New Berlin Memorial Day Ceremony, which honors men and women who gave their lives so American citizens can enjoy freedom.
Strategic Goals Update:
Wisconsin Student Assessment System Results: Director of Continuous Improvement Eileen Depka shared the district’s WKCE results. The District has increased scores by two percent in reading and five percent in math, and is growing at a faster rate than the state and several benchmark districts. Depka credited the beginning implementation of new curriculum resources, professional learning, response to intervention processes and high-quality teachers for these results.

Secondary Programming: New Berlin Eisenhower Principal Michael Fesenmaier shared a new structure for ELO and an added advisory period for middle and high school students next school year. The structure was developed based off of ongoing feedback from students, staff and parents. Communications are planned for this week and will be posted to the district website.

Long-Range Facilities Maintenance Plan (link coming coon)
Chief Finance and Operations Officer Roger Dickson presented an updated Long-range Facilities Plan. Recommendations within the plan emphasize the district’s established practice to address health, safety and academic items. The Board is asked to approve a five-year plan each year to establish priorities and focus time and resources. Although a five-year plan is adopted, only funding for the most current year’s approved projects are included in the annual budget recommendations.
Preliminary 2014-15 Budget (link coming soon)
Chief Finance and Operations Officer presented a 2014-15 preliminary budget that recommends funding priorities for the upcoming school year. The Board is expected to adopt the preliminary budget on June 9. It will be shared with the electorate at the Budget Hearing & Annual Meeting, during which the electorate will establish a tax levy amount to operate the school district for 2014-15.
