Highlights from the Board of Education Meeting - 1/13/2014

Recognitions:
Students were recognized for their recent accomplishments. Eisenhower Girls Swim & Dive State Meet Qualifiers: Nicole Bellford, Shayna Putney, Paige Carter, Allie Schroeder and Sammy Kozlowski. Eisenhower Boys Volleyball players: Brett Hanson (Honorable Mention, All State Honors) and Micky Sugar (2nd Team All State and Player of the Year).

Administrative Team Reports:
Moving New Berlin Forward Update: Superintendent Joe Garza discussed New Berlin Chamber of Commerce First Annual Business Expo to be held at Ronald Reagan Elementary March 21 & 22. This event is being supported by Moving New Berlin Forward.

College & Career Readiness Update: Director of Personalized Learning Larry Lueck, Director of Curriculum Kelli Kwiatkowski and Director of Communications Melinda Mueller previewed college and career readiness activities occurring in January and February. These include an Academic & Career Planning Night on January 22, Career Days on January 28 and January 29, and course registration during the month of February. They shared drafts of new student and parent resources including an Academic & Career Planning Worksheet, Programs of Study Guide and Course Offering Guide.

Student Representative Report: Dominick Ropella reported on holiday festivities and spirit days at West. Exam weeks have started – there has been no negative feedback from students on the new exam schedule. West Academic Decathlon recently participated in competition and is awaiting results.

Regular Agenda Items:
First Read Revisions to Policy 6150 – Advanced Placement The proposed revision includes current practice of expecting students to take an AP exam if they take an AP course. The policy will be up for approval at the January 27 Board of Education meeting.

Discuss/Approve Secondary School Programming: Director of Kelli Kwiatkowski and Director of Personalized Learning reviewed new/revised middle and high school course proposals and career & service learning opportunities for the 2014-15 school year. All new opportunities were selected to fill gaps in the curriculum and to prepare students for college and careers. The Board approved the course proposals as presented.

Discuss/approve school calendars for 2014-15 and 2015-16: The Board approved school year calendars for 2014-15 and 2015-16. The district will continue the practice of monthly professional learning days in support of continued, regular staff development and collaboration time.

Discuss/approve audited financial statements for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013: Ryan Schumacher from Feld Schumacher CPAs presented the audited financial statements.  There were no major findings in the audit. The Board approved the audited financial statements as presented.

Discuss refinance outstanding long-term debt: Chief Finance and Operations Officer Roger Dickson explained an opportunity to refinance some outstanding long-term debt allowing the district to save approximately $445,000 (net present value $354,000) over the next 10 years. The Board gave consent for Dickson to continue investigating the option of refinancing long-term debt.

Approval of Policy 6190.1: Independent Education Evaluation. The updates were made in consultation with DPI. The Board approved the policy as presented.

First Read Recommendation to Delete 6164.91: Procedures for Participation of Students with Disability in the Standardized Achievement Testing Program. This policy was deemed unneeded in consultation with DPI. It will be up for approval at the January 27 meeting.

First Read Policy 5114: Open Enrollment. It is required that the Board review the Open Enrollment policy each January. There are no suggested changes. The policy states the district may require 7th grade students to reapply each year for open enrollment. While that is not practice, the policy provides the flexibility in case reapplication was ever needed. The policy will be up for approval at the January 27 meeting.
