Students were recognized for their participation in a weeklong World Affairs Seminar at Carroll University during summer. Students told the Board the memorable seminar opened their eyes to global issues, particularly involving gender inequities and social injustice – the themes of this year’s seminar. The New Berlin Rotary provided student scholarships to attend.
Moving New Berlin Forward Update: Superintendent Joe Garza announced the Moving New Berlin Forward Business Breakfast on Wednesday, October 30 from 7:30 – 9 a.m. Businesses/organizations will be invited to learn how they can provide opportunities for students while helping their businesses. Student Representative Address – New Berlin Eisenhower junior Nitish Katta introduced himself as the new student representative. A lifelong New Berlin resident, Katta said he attended Glen Park Elementary before Eisenhower and currently is involved with soccer, tennis, DECA, forensics and student union. The school year is off to a good start and students are adjusting to the new math curriculum, he said.
Regular Agenda Items:
The Board unanimously approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recommended by the New Berlin Police Department that would allow off-duty New Berlin police officers to carry concealed firearms on campus to enhance safety and security for the district community and guests. The Board also approved revisions to Policy 5129 to reflect the MOU.
Superintendent Joe Garza shared the first reading of New Policy 4115 - Wellness Screening Privacy, which establishes privacy protocols for the district’s wellness coordinator. The policy will return to the Board for approval at its Oct. 28 meeting.
The Board approved its 2014 Board meeting schedule as follows: Jan. 13 and. 27, Feb. 10 and 24, March 10 and 24, April 7 (if needed) and 28, May 12 and 27, June 9 and 23, July 14, Aug. 11 and 25, Sept. 8 and 22, Oct. 13 and 27, Nov. 10 and 24, and Dec. 15.

The next regularly scheduled Board meeting is Monday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. at the New Berlin West Idea Center.
