In our hometown:
A January 8, 2013 NOW news report titled Residents Speak Out Against New Berlin Walmart, informed us that “During three hours of speakers giving opinions to the New Berlin Plan Commission about a Walmart supercenter proposed for 15205-15375 W. Greenfield Ave., not one person favored it. “
The May 3rd NOW article Opposition Group Zones In On Walmart’s New Berlin Plans reports that “Neighbors First New Berlin, a group that organizers say has members in every aldermanic district, formed in December when the Walmart proposal became public and for the past few weeks has been gathering signatures on a petition against the store.
The group has issues with the Walmart plan itself, but it has bigger issues with its request to change the zoning and the city’s 2020 comprehensive plan.”
According to the May 1, 2013 Racine Journal Times news article Residents Speak Out Against Caledonia Walmart, a neighborhood workgroup meeting was held to get public input about a proposed Walmart store.
Some objected to the land use amendment/ proposed rezoning of the development site.
“Zoning is a promise to the residents of what they can reasonably expect for the future,” Kelly Bain told the workgroup on Wednesday. “We made an investment based on that promise. If a big-box (store) of any kind moves in, we will move out because a big box is not what we signed up for when we chose to make Caledonia our home.”
“A number of speakers suggested that the proposed site wasn’t the right fit and questioned the potential impact a new Walmart location would have on the environment, traffic, drainage and crime.”
