Statement on State Senate Approval of Mining Bill

Senator Mary Lazich released the following statement after the State Senate approved SB1, the Mining Bill, with a 17 to 16 vote.

“It’s about time” said Lazich. “Mining is an opportunity we cannot afford to ignore or chase away.  After two years, hours of debates and public hearings, Wisconsin is closer to having a path towards mining jobs while maintaining the environment within the beautiful state we all call home.“

The Mining Bill allows companies applying to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), a clear path to a permit after demonstrating that mining activity will not harm the environment.  The Mining Bill sets timelines that allow the DNR to evaluate permits and give applicants a response.  The bill guarantees that the environment will not be harmed by ensuring an applicant engages in mitigation that improves the watershed.

“This clear, thorough, and environmentally sound permitting process will be a lifeline for many families within Wisconsin. Mining has a rich history in our state. We will honor that history by allowing a future for mining. We do not have to choose between our environment and jobs.  The Mining Bill allows us to have our cake and eat it too.”
