Teachers' Turn to Learn: SDNB Hosts Professional Learning Event

Peter Jonas offers keynote speech to New Berlin educatorsTeaching Rule #101: there is always more to learn! That applies to teachers, too.

So when students had no school on Feb. 14, teachers from all SDNB schools gathered at New Berlin West Middle/High School to engage in professional learning workshops.

But this time, there was a twist: the day was set up as a conference-style event with more than 50 sessions. Teachers could choose which sessions to attend. Most were led by their esteemed colleagues, in an effort to spread their knowledge and expertise across grade levels and school buildings.

It all had one goal: to improve education for the students.

The conference kicked off in the Performing Arts Center with a keynote speaker from Cardinal Stritch University - Peter Jonas, chair of the doctoral leadership department. Jonas had staff  "laughing and learning" as he demonstrated how strategically using humor in classrooms can increase student engagement, interest and achievement.

Examples of the sessions that followed include Literacy Differentiation Infused with Technology; Problem Solving and Perseverence; Structuring an Effective Mini-Lesson; Motivating Readers; Using Moodle to Facilitate the Flipped Science Classroom; A Closer Look at Rubrics; Drug Trends and School Safety; and Feedback for Learning: Beyond Assessment and Grading.

Teachers sat in students' classroom chairs to listen and learn from their peers. It was one of many professional learning opportunities the district offers.
