Wisconsin Legislative Audit Bureau Reveals $32.9 million Overpayments by the University of Wisconsin System
During the Wisconsin Legislative Audit Bureau’s (LAB) financial audit of the state of Wisconsin for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, the LAB discovered $32.9 million spending by the University of Wisconsin (UW) System that should not have occurred. The UW System contributed $17.5 million to the Wisconsin Retirement System, (WRS) and paid $15.4 million for health insurance premiums on behalf of 924 employees not employed by the UW System.
The WRS refunded the money; however, the health insurance services were provided and recouping the money for utilized premiums is not likely to occur.
As a member of the Legislative Audit Committee, I can assure you this isn’t over. This fiscal mismanagement cannot be tolerated.
