Mitt Romney Defines "Middle Income" as $200,000-$250,000 Or Less

Elections

In an interview with “Good Morning America’s” George Stephanopoulos, Mitt Romney was asked: “Is $100,000 middle income?”

Romney responded, “No, middle income is $200,000 to $250,000 and less.

Huh?

His campaign later clarified that Romney was referring to household not individual income.

Oh, but the Census Bureau reported last week that the median ( midpoint)  U.S. household income was $50,054.

$50,054!  That's a far cry from $250,000.

According to a 2009 Tax Policy Center study of income distributions, earners making $180,000 and up are in the top 5 percent of the population.
