Remembering Oak Creek
Wisconsin will always remember August 5, 2012, as the day when six people died as victims of a senseless act of violence at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek.
Even now, the motivation to commit such an act is incomprehensible. It’s important for all of us to seize this moment and use this time to educate ourselves and others, so that we may appreciate and respect the beliefs we may not share and the religions we may not practice.
Discrimination and violence targeted toward a specific ethnic or religious group shakes the core of who we are as Americans. In the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, our founding fathers placed special emphasis on protecting religious freedom for all Americans. We must show constant vigilance in defending our founding principles.
As we move forward as a state and nation and attempt to help victims and their families heal, Wisconsin will join together and stand with members of the Sikh community.
Throughout the last week, my wife, Tonette, and I attended several vigils and visited with some members of the Sikh community. We have been struck by their strength, grace and persistent dedication to peace in the face of tremendous pain.
I commend the state and national media outlets that have already made it a priority to use their position to inform and educate their audiences about the Sikh faith. I have directed my office to produce a video incorporating this message. You will be able to view the video by going to my Facebook page or Twitter account. Please watch it and share it with others.
It has been a pleasure communicating with you. It is an honor to serve as your Governor and represent the residents of Wisconsin.
