State Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) represents parts of four counties: Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, and Walworth. Her Senate District 28 includes New Berlin, Franklin, Greendale, Hales Corners, Muskego, Waterford, Big Bend, the town of Vernon and parts of Greenfield, East Troy, and Mukwonago. Senator Lazich has been in the Legislature for more than a decade. She considers herself a tireless crusader for lower taxes, reduced spending and smaller government.

The week that was: Jan. 31-Feb. 4
It was another eventful week in the state Senate. We approved special session bills to get the economy going, approved secretary appointments and the governor delivered his first State of the State address.
Republicans turn wetlands project to win-win
So often in politics, issues are seen as zero-sum games. When one side wins, the other is negatively affected. While this makes for easy characterization and consumption, it misses the point. Sometimes there are opportunities for win-win.
Department of Veterans Affairs audit raises concerns
Today, the non-partisan Legislative Audit Bureau released an audit of the Wisconsin Veterans Homes, Department of Veterans Affairs. There are several very troubling findings in the report.
1. The homes’ operating expenditures have exceeded revenues in four of the last five years.

Week in review: Feb. 4-Feb. 11
Things stayed busy at the state Capitol this week.
Tuesday, the Senate approved two more of Gov. Walker’s nominations. Gary Hamblin will be the Secretary of Corrections and Ted Nickel will be the Commissioner of Insurance. I am confident both will do a great job.

Business before the Wisconsin State Senate
The Senate was on the floor Tuesday and Wednesday. Senate Democrats were noticeably absent. All 19 Senate Republicans showed up to do the people’s work.
Senate acts on Voter ID bill, Bob Uecker resolution
The Senate remained under a call of the house Thursday. Under a call of the house, absent members of the Senate are required to come to the Senate chamber. The 14 Senate Democrats have ignored this requirement for the last week.
With 19 Republican members present, the Senate has a quorum and can deliberate and approve bills that do not have a fiscal impact. To approve bills with fiscal implications, the Senate needs a three-fifths quorum, or 20 members present.
