Wisconsin Gained 23,321 Jobs from December 2010 until December 2011
Data released today for the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) reveals 23,321 Wisconsin jobs were added between December 2010 and December 2011. The QCEW is a program within the US Department of Labor – Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that compiles hard figures based on state counts of employment covering 98 percent of US jobs.
The positive employment numbers for the last year are a sharp contrast to initial estimates of a loss of 33,900 jobs over the same time period. The early employment figures were based solely on monthly reports from the BLS. These monthly reports have historically been prone to massive revision because they are based on a poll of only 3.5 percent of businesses.
In contrast, the QCEW issues quarterly counts of employment and wages based on reporting by 98 percent of employers. According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD), every quarter all employers covered under state or federal unemployment insurance are required to submit reports on monthly employment, quarterly total and taxable wages, and contributions for hourly and salaried employees.
Wisconsin has approximately 160,000 businesses required to submit this information to DWD. DWD sends the data to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Bureau incorporates the information and publishes the QCEW. States are required to send data this week to BLS covering the fourth quarter of 2011. The next QCEW release by BLS is scheduled for June 28. DWD released the numbers to ensure Wisconsin’s economic picture is accurately portrayed.
