Some Denied An Opportunity to Speak at May 24 BOE Meeting

School Board, New Berlin Schools

New Berlin NOW reports, “Horrified by potential cuts of two guidance counselors, the New Berlin West High School band director and 26 other teacher layoffs next year, nearly 100 parents, students and taxpayers packed Monday's New Berlin School Board meeting to plead with the board not to make the cuts.”

Indeed, School Board President John Kegel announced at the meeting that he’d received about 20 requests from people who wanted to speak  in Privilege of the Floor, the public comment period. Re: Students Caught Drinking On Zoo Field Trip

New Berlin Schools

Last month, some New Berlin West freshmen students were caught drinking on a Milwaukee County Zoo field trip. We learned that a 14-year old who had become unresponsive in the school bus on the way back to New Berlin, was taken to the hospital for intoxication. Reportedly, the boy's blood-alcohol content was 0.23 and he was cited by New Berlin police for underage drinking.

New Berlin NOW disclosed that per the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office report:   After the field trip was over, chaperons removed between 10 to 12 students suspected of drinking from school buses. Those students all took Breathalyzer tests, which showed that three had consumed alcohol. The three also admitted to police that they had been drinking. They also had a water bottle containing vodka in their possession. Sheriff's deputies cited three students for underage drinking.
