This year pproximately 800 people attended the special Memorial Day ceremony held at Highland Memorial Park. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5716 and Ament Industrial Truck deserve an enormous amount of gratitude for making this solemn event a success. We are aware that planning for this event requires much time and effort and we are extremely grateful for their dedication.
Veterans were honored, there were various speakers, and there was a 21-gun salute. The ceremony ended with red, white and blue balloons tagged with cards showing names of past and present veterans, along with an emotional rendition of Taps.
The lyrics to the song "The Star-Spangled Banner" originate from Francis Scott Key's role during the War of 1812. Key was trying to facilitate an American Prisoner Exchange with the British. He was unable to complete the exchange of prisoners as the entire British navy bombarded the American forces at Fort McHenry in September of 1814.
When the smoke had cleared, Francis Scott Key was able to see that the American flag at Fort McHenry was still waving. He reported to the prisoners below deck that "our flag was still there." Key was so moved by his experience he wrote more verses to his song.
